Ten fascinating facts about .. Indian cricket
Ten fascinating facts about .. Indian cricket
Based on the article i read there are ten fascinating facts about cricket in India.
1 England last hosted India for a Test series in 2002, and the home side dominated the early exchanges with a first Test win at Lord's only for India to win by an innings at Headingley to level the series which finished 1-1.
2 The last Test series between the two countries, in 2006, saw honours even at 1-1 with India crushing the visitors 5-1 in the ODI series. Paul Collingwood and Rahul Dravid were respectively the highest scorers on each side.
3 India's first Test match in England was in June 1932, and was actually the country's first ever test. It was however a three-day match and the visitors lost by 158 runs.
4 India's first Test victory over England came in Chennai (then known as Madras) in 1952, but it wasn't until 1971 that they won a Test on English soil - a four-wicket win at the Oval gave them a historic first ever series victory over their hosts.
5 Indian fans can be rather passionate in their responses to their team's performance. Skipper Mohammed Azharuddin needed an armed guard placed at his home to ensure his safety after his side were beaten by Sri Lanka in the 1996 World cup semi-final, and regional rivalries have led to legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar being roundly booed when they go out to bat, for choosing a side with not enough local players.
6 Key to India's 1971 series win was their spin quartet - as fearsome in their own way as the West Indians that would terrorise English batsman a decade later. One of those spinners, Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, is now a respected Test match umpire.
7 In 1999 Anil Kumble became the first man since England's Jim Laker to take ten wickets in a Test match innings when he took 10-74 against Pakistan in Delhi.
8 Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 183 not out against Sri Lanka in 2005 has never been equalled by a wicketkeeper in one day internationals.
9 After Australia famously lost to India at Kolkata in 2001 after making them follow on, Oz skipper Steve Waugh labelled India "The Final Frontier" as a result of his otherwise all-conquering side's continued inability to win a Test series in India.
10 Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" was famously the inspiration for Andrew Flintoff's England's to win the most recent Test between the two sides, sparking off an Indian second innings collapse to 100 all out thanks to Shaun Udal's unlikely spell of 4-14.
